Government formulated the Green Belt Initiative with the aim to using the available abundant water and land resources for irrigation to increase production, productivity, incomes and food security. The initiative is to reduce the heavy reliance on the unreliable rain-fed agriculture which is susceptible to weather shocks and natural disasters like unreliable rainfall patterns, droughts, dry spells, and floods.

Using the available water and land resources to create wealth through increased agricultural production, productivity and enterprise development for domestic and export markets.

Transforming Malawi into a wealthy nation with assured livelihoods and sustainable utilisation of land and water resources.
